The affirmation below is made by many Bible Students: I. We affirm the humanity of Jesus and the deity of Christ. (Reprints 4955) Probably, most Bible Students would say that Jesus is divine, but Bible Students generally limit the term “divine” as applied to Jesus only after his resurrection, for they blend the meaning of “divine” with “immortality” in the spirit realm. We believe, however, the scriptures indicate that a broader usage of the terms “deity” and “divine” can be applied. The question has been raised, was Jesus, as a human being, “divine”, or “deity”? Most Bible Students would probably answer “no”, for they generally view the term “divine” to be equivalent with “spirit being”, without consideration of any broader usage of the term. For in Him all the fullness of Deity [Greek transliterated: theotes; Strong's #2320] dwells in bodily form and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power. -- Colossians 2:9,10, New American Standard Bible translation The above scripture is often cited by trinitarians and some others to offer proof of their two "natures" of Jesus theory. In actuality, there is nothing here about Jesus possessing two natures at once. Such an idea has to be read into what Paul stated. Walter Martin claims that Colossians 2:9 refers to " the triunity of the Godhead ." Revelation 2:8 -To the angel of the assembly in Smyrna write: "The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life says these things: " -- World English Bible translation According to many trinitarians, the phrase "the first and the last" applied to Jesus in Revelation 1:17 and Revelation 2:8 offers proof that Jesus is Jehovah (Yahweh), since Jehovah speaks of himself as first and last.
