But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. — Romans 8:11. The above scripture is often presented with the thought that it was “the Spirit” here who raised Jesus from the dead. Usually, this scripture is presented with the thought that it was the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit — all three — that raised Jesus from the dead. Actually, many misread this verse as though it says that God’s spirit raised up Jesus from the dead; although we do believe it possible that the only true God (John 17:1,3) did indeed use his Holy Spirit in raising Jesus up from the dead, that is not what is said in this scripture. “Him who raised up Jesus” refers to the God and Father of Jesus, not back to “Spirit”. “Spirit” is depicted as belonging to the One who raised Jesus up from the dead. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. This scripture has been given to us as proof of the trinity, or the teaching that Jesus is Jehovah (Yahweh).  Actually, we find nothing here about God, the Son and the holy spirit being three persons in one being or one God (trinity), nor does it say that Jesus is Jehovah (oneness, LDS). "God" here is one person, and Jesus is definitely distinguished from being the God who spoke to and through the prophets old in Hebrews 1:1,2. The spirit of God and the spirit of Christ are both mentioned in the verse; it does not say, however, that the spirit of Christ is the spirit of God. The assumption appears to be that the spirit is referred to as the Spirit of God and also the spirit of Christ, and that this should be accepted as proof that Jesus is God Almighty...

Our trinitarian neighbors often point to this scripture as being one of the scriptures that prove that the Bible teaches their trinity dogma. Actually, we find nothing at all in the verses that say that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is more than one person, or that Jesus is a person of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The claim is that the holy spirit is being called "God" in Acts 5. Actually, this scripture does not directly call the holy spirit "God."
